K-9 Unit

The Sheriff's Department K-9 Unit is comprised of members from the Road Patrol Division.

The K-9 Unit presently consists of four members – 3 German Shepherds and 1 Bloodhound. 

They are;

Deputy Patrick Fitzgerald and K-9 Frenkie, Deputy Joe Murphy and K-9 Asta, Deputy Brian Lazarus and K-9 Dafne and Deputy Joe DiMariano and K-9 Truman.   Frenkie, Asta and Dafne are “Patrol Dogs” and were imported to the United States from the Czech Republic.  The teams were trained at the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department K9 training facility and received instruction in the areas of handler protection, tracking, building searches, area searches and evidence recovery.  Frenkie and Dafne are also cross trained for narcotic detection. Asta is cross trained for explosives detection.  Truman is a “Trailing Dog” and he is used exclusively for locating people (criminals as well as lost persons).  He was donated to the Sheriff’s Department and is assigned to Deputy DiMariano.
