2. Where is the Sheriff's Office Located?

The Sheriff's Office is located at 74 Ontario St. in the City of Canandaigua.  The Ontario County Jail is located at 3045 County Complex Dr. in the Town of Hopewell.

3. How do I obtain a copy of a police report?

Copies of police reports (for example a report for the motor vehicle accident that you had) are generally available by the end of the first full business day after the report was taken although it is a good idea to call ahead to make sure it is available.  The reports are available at the Records Division of the Sheriff's Office temporarily located at the Ontario County Jail at 3045 County Complex Dr. in the Town of Hopewell.  The direct phone number to the records office is (585) 396-4618.

4. How do I request a "Property Check" of my house/property?

You can request a check of your house/property while you are away (vacation etc.) by calling the Sheriff's Office, stopping in (Monday - Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm) or by filling out the Property Check form and sending it to the Sheriff's Office (mail or e-mail).

5. How do I obtain records under the Freedom of Information Law?

A Freedom of Information request must be filed with the County Records Access Officer at 3051 County Complex Dr. Canandaigua, NY 14424.  A Freedom of Information request form can be downloaded by going to the Document Center of Ontario County's main web page or by clicking this link http://www.co.ontario.ny.us/doccenter/foil.pdf

6. How do I report outstanding performance by a member of the Sheriff's Office?

If you would like to compliment any member of the Sheriff's Office please call the Sheriff at (585) 394-4560 or 1-800-394-4560.  You can also submit your comments in writing to: Sheriff Philip C. Povero 74 Ontario St., Canandaigua, NY 14424 or you may send the Sheriff an e-mail at Sheriff@co.ontario.ny.us. Alternatively you can fill out a Citizens Comment Form and return it via mail or in person to the Sheriff's Office.

7. How do I report dissatisfaction with the performance of a member of the Sheriff's Office?

Although we strive to satisfy every person that we come in contact with, we recognize that this does not always happen.  If you have a complaint about the way a deputy or other member of the Sheriff's Office responded to your call for service please call (585) 394-4560 or 1-800-394-4560 and request to speak to the on duty supervisor for that person. Alternatively you can fill out a Citizens Comment Form and return it via mail or in person to the Sheriff's Office.

8. How do I obtain a pistol permit?

Pistol permit applications are available from the Ontario County Clerk's Office, located at 20 Ontario St. in the City of Canandaigua. For more information refer to the County Clerk's web page by clicking here.

9. How do I go about initiating a Small Claim against a person?

Small Claims must be filed in the municipality (City/Town/Village) that the person being sued lives or works.  Contact the local court in that municipality for further, specific information.

10. How do I go about initiating a Small Claim against a business or corporation?

Small Claims against a business or corporation must be filed in the municipality where the business is located or where the business owner resides. Contact the local court in that municipality for further, specific information.

11. How do I obtain a Sheriff's ID?

Sheriff ID's are available during normal business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, except holidays) at the Ontario County Sheriff's Office at 74 Ontario St. in Canandaigua.  To obtain an ID you will need to bring with you;

         1) Your ORIGINAL birth certificate (or a CERTIFIED COPY with the raised seal)   

             issued by the State Department of Health (not a hospital issued certificate)

         2) Something else with your name and date of birth on it, such as a Doctor's bill,

             school record, etc.

         3) Cash (as follows)

               a) Ages 60 and above - Free

               b) Under 16 years of age - $10.00

               c) Ages 16-59 - $20.00

12. I need my fingerprints taken for an application, can I have this done at the Sheriff's Office?

As of January 1, 2010 the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) will only accept electronic fingerprint submissions.  DCJS has contracted with L-1 Identity Solutions to provide electronic fingerprinting services at various locations throughout New York State.  For further information or to schedule an appointment, access L-1's website at www.L1enrollment.com or call their toll free number (877) 472-6915.  L-1 also has a TTY/TTD line for the hearing impaired, (877) 219-1099.  If you ONLY need fingerprinting on a Federal Bureau of Investigation card (blue writing) it can be done by appointment at the Ontario County Jail at 3045 County Complex Drive in Canandaigua.  Call (585) 396-4625 to schedule an appointment.  If you reach voice mail, be sure to leave your contact information.  

Our procedures for obtaining criminal fingerprints for those who have been arrested will remain the same. 

13. How do I find out if a sex offender lives near me?

The Ontario County Sheriff's Office subscribes to Offender Watch, all you need to do is click on this link then click on the "Search for Offenders in your area" button and follow the instructions.
